What did you like about your old community and what do you like about the new community? How many of your neighbors do you know? Were there a special days to get together with you neighbors before and what about now? Was there a neighborhood watch program in your community and is there one now? Do you think your community is safe enough to raise children? Have you ever helped a neighbor or a neighbor helped you? Explain.

In Ukraine i lived in a small village. Six thousand people lived there. Everyone knew each other. People seemed friendly and polite. We trusted and helped each other. We could lend some necessary tools each other and even money. When my children were very small i leaved them one of my close neighbor. We did some favor each other. We all had advantages from that. When someone was boring , he could come over and talk to your neighbor. I have never had some big conflicts with members of my community. But only my neighbor's chickens sometime could come in my yard. I was forced to turn out them. Sometimes i threw some rocks toward them. I told to my neighbor about it, but she forgot it for some reason. There was the fencer between our yards, but those animals flew over it. My neighbor came and turn out them again. I need to say that our yards looked very pretty because we kept order and cleanness there. We did not have some specials days together, but sometime in spring we in same time cleaned up our yards, walk and drive ways. Now i live at the big apartment complex. There are one hundred twenty five apartments there. Sixty percent Slavic people live there. It is convenient and safe because they are usually Christians and that's why they are quiet and keep order in your houses and near them. Only neighbor's children walk next to my window and make a lot of noise in the summer. But i understand them because they are children. I am acquainted with ten families only but communicate with two. We do some favors each other and have a small talk sometime. My apartment complex usually is quiet clean and safe. Everyone lives his own life and doesn't disturb the others. It's very good , i think.

In my native country, I lived in a small town. Almost all people in my old community knew one another. If somebody was born or died on the other side of the town, everybody knew about this the same day. I liked people of my old community for their honesty and friendship. We often organized big block parties, which the whole street participated in. There were birthday parties, wedding parties, house-warming parties in my old neighborhood. Often, my neighbors helped me, and I helped them. For example, when I bought the new furniture, I asked my neighbor to help me to carry it into the house. When my neighbor had financial problems, he asked me to lend him some money. In my old neighborhood, I always could depend on my neighbors, and they could depend on me.

I live in a house and all of my neighbors live in houses. I have good neighbors. All my neighbors are Americans. I know five families that live right next to me or across the street. Everyone is nice. We are good friends. We live in a very quiet area. We live very close to the park. The park has a playground and a basketball court. My children and my neighbor’s children play together at the park. Older children ride bikes in the park. I have a lot of fun there with my neighbors.

I was born and lived in Ukraine. Ukraine was one of the fifteen republics of the Soviet Union. Ukraine has beautiful cities and villages. People were busy doing their work. In the cities, there are a lot of factories. The workday waws eight hours long. The pay wasn't low and the prices on everything weren't high. The responsibility of every citizen was to work. There was no unemployment. Ukraine is rich in good black soil. In villages, the population works in the soil, and raises wildlife. The Ukrainian people are very hard-working, they care about their land and their country. We had free education in schools, colleges, and universities. Medicine was also free. My Ukraine is a beautiful country, nice and clean villages and cities. There is a lot of gardens, forests, plains and rivers. I love my homeland. I miss my friends and relatives. I always remember them in my prayers.

When i used to live in Belarus we had a great community there. I lived in a village and was located two miles from a city. I knew a lot of people there so we all was kinda friendly. On my street where i used to live we had friendly neighbors. When my kids where small i let them play outside the whole day, but i also knew if they are coming home to early they wont to eat. They eat at home and went outside again. They had a lot of fun out there. We where friendly with our neighbors and they where friendly with us. We didn't have problems with them, but sometimes their chickens flew over the fence and eat our growing that we plant. Our streets didn't have asphalt and cars didn't drive fast so we don't have to worry for our kids. When i came to America i saw how people are living here is two different lives here and there. In America everything is quiet you live in a apartment pay for your bills and nobody is touching you.

Community service in helping people has been always important for me and in my life. I always try my best to help to improve my society. I grow up in Isfahan, one of the big cities of Iran .I had many neighbors in area and we use to help each other. Because my job was sewing and my neighbors needed fix their clothes and order dresses some other things. When one of the neighbors was sick I would go to help her/him, and if they had a gathering .I would help them to prepare the requirements for the party. I and my husband use to assist seniors to go to the hospital, go shopping for them and clean their houses .I some times picked up their children or watched them ,but some neighbors didn’t talk to me because I was a Baha’i person some of them would tell if to other neighbors you never socialize with lotfi , because they are un clean but I didn’t care about their feelings towards me, and I would only help them in any situation .My community in Isfahan wasn’t safe for raising my children, and I had to live there. one years ago I came to the U.S.A,and started a new life in Sacramento. We were refugees. we didn’t have a job ,and any furniture at home ,until I bought a car. Finally I found a job, but after one month my car which was parked in front of apartment, was stolen .I was un happy ,because I laid off and it was beginning of a very hard life for me .I didn’t have my contact with neighbors .Then I and my children moved after nine month to sunset in fair oaks. I like my community .It’s quiet and safe because our community has a gate, but after two months my car was stolen again .I’m not so lucky in only one year, my car was stolen two times. After one year, our life changed in a good way and I could see the result of my hard works. I think America is very different in my country. I have freedom which I didn’t have in my country ,but razing children in a new culture is very hard ,but I hope in future and I think God will help us as well. Thanks God for every things .

I have good memories about the old community, but only from my youth. Human progress and modern technology makes communities to be increasingly less coagulated. People have become much more hypocrites. They are too much interested in themselves than in the people around them. Selfishness has reached alarming levels. They are polite and friendly but only superficially. The words became void. The phrase "how can I help you" has become a commonplace, without a real desire to express it. The only ones, who keep the correlation between words and deeds, are elderly people. In the community where I live now I only know three or four neighbors. I do not know their names, but we say hello when we meet. It is true that I am new in this community. But even in the old community, I did not know too many people. Neighborhood where I live now is pretty safe to raise a child. But that is because the laws that govern society. People respect the laws of fear, not of conscience. People were robotically, began to be increasingly less human. I miss the human warmth of thirty years ago. But what can I do, life goes on, with good and bad.

Before I was living in a house now I live in apartment. Here where I live now there are a lot of Russian people and friends so is more interesting, but in the house where I have lived before that I wasn’t talking to my neighbors because I was leaving the house early and I was returning at night. Even my neighbors weren’t very talkative with my family. So I like more the community where I live now, because is more friendly, it’s safer for my children and closer to many stores. I didn’t hear never about a neighborhood watch program in my community and I don’t know what it is. I helped neighbors many times and they helped me we are very close because mostly of them are from the same culture as I am and we and mostly of them are my friends.

I like the community that I live in now . It is a peaceful place where all my neighbors know each other .I moved in my new house about tree years ago since then I have a great time of meeting new people around he place . I live not far from a park were ago with my family and a few of my neighbors and their kids on weekends . On a holidays like Christmas we give each others presents . This is a new experience for me because I never did anything like it ever before in my life .My community is a quiet place , so I feel really safe raising my child in here . I love the summer time when in the evening all the neighbors kids gathering outside to play .It also a really good time for parents to communicate with each other since every body is busy during a day time .I feel good about helping my neighbor when ever they need me , and I am glad that I can ask for help in return in case ill need it too .I am really happy that we chose this neighborhood to live in and most of all that we have a nice neighbors by our sides !

I liked my old community, because there were wonderful people around me. I played with my neighbors'children, discussed latest news and had a fun.The new community is a quiet place. I just moved here, and I didn't have a chance to meet with my neighbors. We didn't have any special days, to get together in my old community. There wasn't any neighborhood watch programs in my old community.I don't think my new community is safe enough not only to raise my children, but even to live in. During the short time we lived here a few of my neighbors' cars were vandalized, some of them were stolen. My neighbor's son was involved in an accident some time ago, and I helped him before an ambulance came here.

When I lived in Ukraine most of the time we stayed at the same place, so I was familiar with all my neighbors and we were all like one big family. Visiting each other without an invitation. Then I moved to live in a different city while studying for 5 years. Even though I have lived in few different places I knew almost all of my neighbors at that address. Ukrainian people are more open and it is easy to be friends with them.

I learned so much in my old community.I used to live in a big city but I can say community like district or something like that ,anyways in my ex community everybody knows each other and there is always problems everywhere although in a special day like christmas or anniversary of the town everybody gather at the local auditorium and just get fun we any kind of entertainers like actors, singers, dancers, etc and watch the whole scene and of course after that we have party for old the neighbors where everybody forget about their arguments.I used to play soccer at the local team, and I knew more people from other community because our team played in differents parts of the city,is not too good to raise children in places where there is necesity for money, for example I know people from my community that took the bad way for living. Now in America things are different if you want to be success in life you have to go for it,if you don't have too many members of your family the neighboors are not going to help you where you want to be,I mean for me things are different is better for me now because I learned to be more responsible and mature in life and finally of course to raise children in America is far the best option that a parent could have .

I was born in a small town In Moldova.I lived there for 37 years and then I moved to the U.S. In my town In my town every family had a house. We all knew each others very well, especially our neighbors. I really like my old community because It was very friendly and we all helped each other when needed.I remember all my neighbors that I had. Some of them are not in life but I still remember them. When i moved to the united states, I first lived in an Apartment and I didn't like it very much because it was small and boring. My neighbors were from different countries and we could not communicate with each other. The new neighborhood was unfamiliar at first but then I got used to it and I like it. But I think the old neighborhood was still better to live for me.

I spent most of my life in the Russian community. There not a lot of differences between Russian and American community.I liked all my neighbors where i use to leaved.I lived on the small street in my city.Everybody knows to each other.Old people often went out from their houses and conversed.MY little daughter played with other children and i didn't worry about while she played because i knew nothing bad could happened with her.My neighbors was kind and friendly.I liked my neighbors. Some disadvantage things was that many Russian people smoked cigarettes. In America is lower amount of the smocking people.New i leave in apartment complex and there are a lot Russian people.I like them they very kindly also. But when i came in America,i lived in the house first. My neighbors were Americans. They were very friendly to my family i liked them also. They were very polite and kindly, and any could help if it needs.I had never the problems with my neighbors not in Russia and America other. It is very important to have a good community.

My native city is Minsk. Here I was born and here I lived 25 years. Its present population is about 12 million people. I love the country for its originality, the wonderful nature, culture, softness of paints.Belarus has such surprising people ready always to come to the aid each other. Belarussian people are polite and benevolent people. Belarus becomes from year to year beautiful. At us pure, beautiful cities and villages in which all conditions for happy life are created.I moved to Sacramento when I was 25 years old. USA also is a beautiful country. There are many interesting places. I am very glad that I have such possibility to live here.

I was born in Belarus and came to America 7 years ago. During these 7 years I have been living in the same community. So I compare it with the neighborhood I had in Belarus. In Belarus I lived with my parents in the house. We had very nice neighbors. They are friendly, polite, and kind. With my friends I can go out in our community even in the evening time and it was safe. Here in America I also live in the nice community. I have a lot of good friends. We can go shopping together, or go to the park to have some fun, or go to the ocean. With some very close friends from my community we celebrate together birthdays and other holidays. On holidays or even without any reason we can make barbeque, or have some coffe and tea with cake. Our children play together and swim together on pool. About safety I would not sat that our community is safe enough. Sometimes we have some thefts, it is not often because we have security in our community.

In my country I lived in a big city, called Baghdad. Mostly my old community and my new one are almost the same. People helped each other and they cared about each other. I knew a lot of neighbors in my community. In my community neighbors are nice, helpful, and protected. There are no special days for neighbors get together. Neighbors always see each other, talk to each and if someone in trouble neighbors get together and solve the problems. In the new community neighbors helps each other, but if you are in trouble people here they don’t really help you. There was a neighborhood watch program on my old community, but in my new one not really, they don’t have a neighborhood program. My old community was safe to raise children, this was before the war, and after the war it’s not safe to raise children back there. In my new community it’s safe enough to raise children now.

I like the fact that in my old community I knew everyone. What I like about my new community is, no one ever bothers you. In American I appreciate this a lot. I know only 1 of my neighbors. There were never special get together with never day not now not ever. There was no such thing as neighbor watch in Russia, I do not know if there is one right now where I live. I think my community is safe to raise children. A neighbor once let me barrow his ladder, it was very helpful.

I loved my old community. I knew many people there. People were helpful and friendly. I like the politeness of neighbors in new community. I don't know any of my neighbors. We didn't have any special get together days in old community, because neighbors could come and go as they pleased any day. In America I never get together with neighbors. We didn't have neighborhood watch program, because there was no need for it. I think there is a neighborhood watch program in our current community. I think my community is very safe to raise children. Once I helped my neighbor build banya. Banya is a national Russian bath house.
