Are there a lot of immigrants in your community? Do immigrants in your community live in some certain areas? If so, what areas? Should immigrants learn English? Why? How can an immigrant learn English? How would you encourage your children to become bilingual by maintaining the original language and becoming fluent in English? Should immigrant children be educated in their original language? Do you think waiting for 5 years to become naturalized is too long? {If so, why? How does an immigrant become a citizen in your country? How does the culture of this country become richer by immigrants?

Sacramento area has a big Slavic Community. It is over 150.000 persons. They live all around Sacramento County. The Slavic Community has a lot of churches, stores, businesses. Also many Russian peoples work on the government. I think the everybody who lives in the USA should learn and speak English well. It is very important. The children have to learn first English language and another language from the county they came. I think it is important know your native language. If you want to keep your traditions, you must encourage your children don't forget their mother language. They should speak native language at home, also they should read and watch native books and TV. I think waiting for 5 years to become naturalized, it is not long. During the time you can learn more about American history, culture, law and life. Also you have possibility to learn English very well. I'd like to have American citizenship.

In my community we have lot of immigrants from different country. Many of immigrants live in cheap area because they don’t job and also they don’t know anything about city. , in the United States should be required to learn English. Lot of immigrant’s children learns English fast, but some are not. Most of people learn English from esl school and also from community college. I encourage to my community adult people. It would be in their best interest that they learn English. If your children didn't learn English then they would be an outcast to their peers. In my opinion it would be very difficult for the immigrants to communicate with other people without knowing English. English is spoken throughout the United States so the immigrants wouldn't know anything that is going on around them. I think waiting for 5 years to become naturalized is not too long because we need learn about united state history, but in five years is not enough time for people who don’t speak, write, and understand English language. In my country I don’t know a way to an immigrant become a citizen.

Yes, they are a lot of immigrants in my community. I am also an immigrant. They live in poor neighborhood and neighborhood with other immigrants with the same country. Yes, of course immigrants we need to learn English to get a job, and to be able to communicate with others like: Doctors, teachers, etc. We can learn English by, going to school and trying to talk more English. Watch TV only in English or be observing other people talking. I encourage my children to be bilingual by, at home talking only in Spanish and I am teaching them about our culture. Cooking Salvadorian foods. And they had an opportunity to visit my country. They are fluent in English too. Some immigrant children are now educates in their original language in Sacramento, I know three charter Elementary schools that have bilingual program Spanish and Hmong. I read in Sacramento bee last week that, next year another school in Spanish will be open in Downtown. I think five years is enough to become naturalized, because in five years they can learn English and also prepared for a citizen test. And demonstrate a good moral character. In my country El Salvador, I don’t know what are the required for become citizen. The culture of this country is become richer for immigrants by their foods, music, arts and language.

In my community there are a lot of immigrants who live in suburban areas outside the City of Folsom in track houses. I believe all immigrants should learn English for many reasons. First English is the native language of the United States, second learning English can open doors of better jobs opportunities. Third it simply helps to communicate with each other, and also it makes immigrant’s parents more confident when helping teaching their children as they get in the educational system. The best way to help a child to maintain their original language is to speak to them at home in their native language, listen to music, and let them involve in their native festivals and holidays. Parents could also help their child to be fluent in English through helping them at school, allowing their children to watch educational English programs on TV or computer in order to help their phonics and their speech, listening to music, reading books in English can also help their fluency in English. Additionally another way to improve your Children’s English is to let them be around and play sports, and play days with children whose native language is English. Studies show that children learn better from each other, and they are like sponges and they learn very fast. Parents could teach their children in their original language as an optional and extra curriculum, but they should focus on teaching their children English if they decide to stay in United States. I don’t think five years is too long to become naturalized because in that time a person can learn the language, the history of the country (United State), learn about their duties and their rights (the constitution), and to get familiar with American culture, and finally to adjust to a new environment and new mentality which takes time to do so. I personally lived in a third world country and I never heard about anyone asking to immigrate to my country; therefore I am not familiar with that procedure. The United States for years became richer by immigrants from the time the pilgrims put their feet’s on the new world soil. The immigrants they come to United State for better job opportunities and a better life; therefore they have to work harder to achieve their dreams and by working they have to pay taxes. They also help the economy by investing their money in housing and opening businesses. If every immigrant brings their beautiful culture (food, music, clothing etc..) I can only imagine America as a beautiful basket of flowers with different shapes and colors.

There are a lot of immigrants in Sacramento County from Russia and Ukraine. Most of Russian and Ukraine immigrants live in certain areas as: Antelope, CA, Rancho Cordova, CA, North highlands, CA and Citrus Height, CA. There are a lots of Russian churches and Russian store and couples of Russians clinics in those areas. I think it is very important that Slavic immigrants learn English even if they have Russian speaker person almost in each store or each facilities where they go, so they can understand or ask questions if they will needed. Immigrant should go to any of adults’ English schools, or college to learn English language. I always speak to my children in Russian language at home. I think it is important for them to know their native language and understand it.

There are many immigrants in the community where I live, none of them r from my country. It is very important for immigrants to learn language since we live in this country, and because there are so many different languages it is the best to learn English in order to be able to talk to other people. It is much easier for children to learn second language; it is more difficult for an adult. I believe it is important that children don’t forget their first language. Everybody should be proud of their roots and it is big plus when being bilingual. The more different cultures the more richer the country will become, since everybody will bring something different. It is easier for people to learn English when they talk to people who cannot speak their language, because it forces them to use more words and not relay on the fact that they will understand their native language.

Yes there are a lot of immigrants in my community. No immigrants live in different areas everywhere. Immigrants should learn English because it's better for them and they can have better opportunity in this country. They can go to the English school to find better jobs and understand other people. My sons they speak both languages since they were children but all the time I talk to them in Spanish because it is better for them to speak two languages because they have more opportunities in this country and can find better jobs and good pay. I think to wait five years is long because a lot of people when they come, they come little and some are professionals and i think it's not good because they need better opportunity.

My family and I have lived in this community for more than ten years. So far, there are not a lot of immigrants. Some people came from Mexico, some from Ukraine, others from California. I think that immigrants should learn English, because it will help you in life. Also, it is much easier to get a job if you know more than one language. An immigrant can learn English by going to college or school, and communicating very often. Well, my children are already bilingual. They go to a school where they can learn English and Russian. No, I don't think that immigrant children should be educated in their own language, because this is an English place. Also it is because almost everything in California is written in English. Immigrants would have to read it. However, if they know only their own language, they will be able to read only a couple words, or maybe even nothing at all. No, I don't think that waiting for 5 years to become naturalized is too long, because for some people it might take even longer than that. For immigrants to become a citizen, they will need to pass an exam about the history and the language. When immigrants come to live in a different country, they bring their culture with them. Over time, some of the manners settle down in the country where the immigrants arrived.
