I believe that the current generations of young people are becoming progressively obsessed with the kind of music that is aimed at the very low level of intellect. The mainstream and commercial music that is available and presented to people as the norm severely lacks all the necessary elements that music should, as an art, possess. I fear that this obsession of the new culture with this type of music may easily translate as the development of a more conventional outlook on life by youngsters. We can easily see the organic growth and gradual movement of music as a pure art towards perfection since the time of the very first written music texts. Renaissance music with the works of John Dowland Giovani De Palestrina evolved into Baroque music with J.S.Bach and G.F Handel being its most important contributors. Classical music was also born out of the Baroque music due to composer’s quests on pushing the boundaries of music further. Classical music also turned into Romantic music with Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Schubert and Franck being its most prominent figures. Claude Debussy in the dawn of the 20th century composed his Afternoon of a Pan that revolutionized the Romantic ideas and his endeavors in search of a more curious version of music lead to the rise of modern music in the 20th century. In the 60s, the Elvis Presley-like music was outshone by the Beatles culture. The generation of 70s were also craving a more extreme version of music and progressive rock genre with bands like Pink Floyd being the fruit of taking such revolutionary actions. Now, for the first time in the whole history, it really seems that people are no longer curious about music and their musical and artistic tastes are deteriorating and this can be explained by the persisting prominence of Hip Hop Culture and the current generation of pop and rock singers.
I'd like to know what you think of the current mainstream music that the majority of young people anywhere in the world are now listening to. How does this commercialized mainstream music differ from the perception of music as an art? Do you agree with my proposition?
